Woman waiting to hear from mum after losing contact in hurricane

The storm’s centre has since passed over the island as it heads towards Cuba.

Ms Godley, recently awarded an OBE for her charity work, said the time difference has made it difficult to keep in touch.

“All I can do is sit by the phone and wait. It’s a time of worry and prayer, there’s only so much we can do from over here,” she said.

Clarendon is near to where forecasters expect the eye of the hurricane to hit.

“Two nights ago I was able to speak to her and just check the sandbags are in position everything is boarded up.

“Then yesterday morning throughout the whole day, [there’s been] no contact whatsoever and that’s where we started to worry. It’s not easy.”
