Newcastle continue their EFL Cup defence on Wednesday, when they welcome Tottenham to St James’ Park for a last-16 clash between two of the Premier League’s most in-form teams.
Spurs last lifted the trophy in 2008 but have a taste for silverware after last season’s Europa League triumph, so the Lilywhites, who have made an excellent start under Thomas Frank, will fancy their chances of pulling off an upset on Tyneside.

Newcastle vs Tottenham preview
Newcastle and Tottenham both ended long-standing trophy droughts last term but only one will be able to progress into the EFL Cup quarter-finals.
The Magpies ended a 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy when beating Liverpool 2-1 in last season’s EFL Cup final while Spurs, whose previous triumph came in the same competition 17 years ago, defeated Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao to lift the Europa League.
Newcastle will be eager to keep their trophy defence alive and have picked up form after a shaky start, winning five of their last seven games, but Tottenham look a touch overpriced given their impressive start under Thomas Frank.
The Dane has drawn some criticism for a reliance on set-pieces but, as long as the wins keep coming, fans are unlikely to be too disgruntled.
Spurs landed a comfortable 3-0 win at Everton on Sunday to make it just one defeat in ten games and while St James’ Park can be a tough place to go, the Lilywhites have excelled on their travels this term.

The north Londoners are yet to taste defeat on the road and that impressive run includes a 2-0 win at Manchester City, a 3-0 rout of West Ham and a solid 2-2 draw against Brighton.
Both teams are expected to rotate their squads but it can be argued that the drop in class from Tottenham’s starters to their bench unit is significantly smaller than Newcastle’s.
Emil Krafth is a lot worse than Kieran Tripper, Aaron Ramsdale’s shot-stopping ability is well below the level of Nick Pope’s and a brace against Bradford in the last round is not convincing evidence that William Osula is a suitable deputy for Nick Woltemade.
A pacy front three of Harvey Barnes, Anthony Elanga and Osula will look to get in behind Tottenham but Kevin Danso’s speed should nullify that threat, potentially leaving Eddie Howe’s side short of ideas.
Spurs can call upon top players including Archie Gray, Pape Sarr, Lucas Bergvall and Richarlison, suggesting they can make light of their odds and book a place in the quarter-finals.
Spence set for a tricky evening
Elanga should see plenty of the ball with Woltemade and Anthony Gordon rested, so expect him to get at Djed Spence at every opportunity.
The Swede’s pace can often see him skip past full-backs and while England international Spence has impressed again this term, two yellows in eight league games makes 4-1 a huge price for him to pick up a booking at St James’ Park.

Spurs may stun Magpies
While the smart bet is to back Spurs to qualify given Newcastle’s form, Frank will have one eye on Saturday’s London derby against Chelsea and he may look to get the job done quickly, meaning those seeking a bigger price should consider taking Tottenham to win in 90 minutes.
Keeping a clean sheet could prove tricky, with Newcastle scoring 17 times in seven matches, but don’t be surprised if Tottenham edge a thriller without the need for penalties.

Tottenham to qualify
Spurs are yet to lose an away game this term, winning four of their seven road outings, and have enough depth to reach the quarter-finals.
Both teams to score
Ten of the last 11 meetings between this pair have seen both teams find the net, with another thriller expected on Tyneside.
Harvey Barnes 1+ shot on target
The Magpies winger netted a brace against Benfica last week and has averaged a shot on target every 23 minutes across his last five appearances.
