With the recent announcement that Enbridge Gas is contemplating closing its office in Chatham, Chatham-Kent’s mayor is exploring ways to ensure the company’s continued presence in the municipality.

Mayor Darrin Canniff issued a statement this week expressing how integral Enbridge has been to CK, not only through employment and investment, but also through meaningful support of local initiatives and organizations.

“Their presence has been, and still is, a valued part of Chatham-Kent’s growth and success,” he said in the statement.

Canniff added that he and CK Council will fight to keep that legacy alive in the community for years to come.

“I have reached out directly to senior leadership at Enbridge and will be working with them to better understand the reasons behind this consideration and to explore every possible avenue to keep them here,” said Canniff. “Our goal is to ensure that Enbridge knows how much they mean to our community and to express our strong desire to see their continued presence in Chatham-Kent.”

The natural gas company confirmed earlier this week that it has been conducting a review of its real estate strategy and is exploring options “to better support our team and evolving operational needs.”

While Enbridge said no final decisions have been made regarding the potential closure of its office on Keil Drive North in Chatham, the company has begun early conversations with local stakeholders.

Enbridge Gas Inc. was formed in 2019 following the merger of Union Gas and Enbridge Gas Distribution.
