During a local T20 tournament in Melbourne on Tuesday night, a ball struck a 17-year-old cricket player in the neck, leaving him fighting for his life. The incident happened during a Ferntree Gully match at Wally Tew Reserve shortly before 5 p.m. The adolescent sustained a serious injury after being struck while warming up in the nets before play.

Before paramedics reached the scene, onlookers hurried to his aid. The player is still on life support at Monash Medical Centre after being taken there right away. According to a 7NEWS Melbourne story, the 17-year-old rising talent has been getting care and has been placed on life support since the devastating event.

After the accident, the match was called off, and cricket fans have since assembled at the location to pay their condolences and leave flowers. The event has also been likened to the terrible 2014 South Australia vs. New South Wales Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground, in which Australian player Phil Hughes was killed after being hit in the neck by a bouncer.

Players and officials impacted by the event are receiving assistance from Cricket Victoria, Cricket Australia, and the two participating clubs. The young player is still in many people’s prayers, but it is unclear if he will pull through. It also raises the question of whether the sport’s present safety regulations are adequate.
