The West Coast Eagles fell short of securing a historic finals berth on Friday night, falling to Carlton by 20 points at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
Senior coach Daisy Pearce says the team’s narrow loss in the final round of the season was tough to take, but also a sign of how far the team has come.
With finals hopes still alive pending other results, Pearce reflected on the disappointment of the result and the pride she feels in the squad’s growth and resilience.
“To be in a position where you’re disappointed because you didn’t win through to finals, that’s where we want to be,” Pearce said.
“You risk it emotionally when you go all in, and I’m proud of the girls for doing that.”
Pearce addressed the team immediately after the match, acknowledging their emotions and encouraging them to stay mentally ready for what comes next.
“We’ve still got to sit and wait now,” Pearce said.
“It’s about not living in the moment for too long and being ready for whatever comes next.”
Despite the result, Pearce praised her side’s energy and approach to the high-stakes contest.
“We hit the front in the last quarter and handled the occasion well overall. A couple of late mistakes cost us, but those are the moments where you do your best learning,” Pearce said.
Pearce was optimistic about the team’s development throughout the season, regardless of the finals outcome.
“There’s clear evidence we’ve improved,” Pearce siad.
“We’re not where we want to be yet, but the players have felt their improvement and their ability to play four quarters of hard, physical footy.”
Pearce also paid tribute to veteran Dana Hooker, who has been a pillar of professionalism and leadership throughout her career, following her retirement announcement during the week.
“Dana was a pro before the competition demanded it. Her toughness, bravery, and elite running have always stood out,” Pearce said.
“Coaching her has been a privilege. Dana is a great leader, she challenges you, she gives you good insights, and she leaves no excuses for anyone.”
The Eagles were without key contributors Jess Rentsch, Mikayla Western and Kellie Gibson, Gibson ruled out mid-game with illness, but the team still pushed Carlton to the limit.
“We weren’t blown away because we’ve built a strong system and developed players in roles,” Pearce said.
“We were competitive across four quarters. It’s disappointing but it’s a credit to our squad.”
While finals remain uncertain, Pearce believes the team has laid a strong foundation for the future.
“They’ve grown in belief and understand the link between hard work and performance,” Pearce said.
“We’ve got a clear idea of how we want to play, and now we can double down on execution and fitness. It’s a young group, and they’ll keep improving.”
