A Muslim mayor, a female governor and other notable election ‘firsts’

Key elections on Tuesday night saw a sweep by the Democratic Party and a number of milestones, from the first female mayor of Detroit to the first Muslim woman to hold statewide office. The biggest headline of the night, Zohran Mamdani’s win in the New York mayoral race, made him the first Muslim, South Asian and person born in Africa to be elected to Gracie Mansion.
