Capitals’ Ovechkin becomes first to reach 900 NHL goals

Alex Ovechkin continues to make his mark on the NHL record books.

The Washington Capitals captain scored his 900th career goal on Wednesday against the St. Louis Blues, making him the first player in league history to reach the milestone.

The 40-year-old broke Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record last season when he potted his 895th career tally against the New York Islanders. Gretzky’s record stood for 31 years before Ovechkin took the crown in his 1,487th game — the same number Gretzky played.

The nine-time Rocket Richard Trophy winner has three goals and eight points this season, his 21st in the NHL.

Over his 1,504-game career, the 2004 first overall pick has 900 goals, 731 assists and 1,631 points. He led the Capitals to a Stanley Cup in the 2017-18 season.
