Windsor updates property standards for all property types

A new City of Windsor bylaw on property standards is now in effect, clarifying expectations for property owners.

The city has updated its online resources to reflect new standards, and residents, property owners, and businesses are encouraged to review the bylaw.

Some of the newly clarified terms include the definitions of a derelict building, vacant building, neglect, and stormwater management system.

Vacant buildings must be maintained inside and out, utilities must remain operational, and boarding up windows is prohibited.

There are also new standards for private stormwater systems, rear yard drains, and exterior lighting. New safety enhancements also include duct-tape smoke detectors for shared furnaces and minimum ceiling heights for basement living spaces.

“These updates are about keeping Windsor’s neighbourhoods vibrant, safe, and welcoming,” said Senior Manager of Inspections with the City of Windsor, Rob Vani. “By clarifying property standards and strengthening enforcement tools, we’re helping residents and property owners take pride in their homes, businesses, and communities.”

The rules are now aligned with the Ontario Building Code to support consistent enforcement city-wide.
