Penny Lancaster says “he sounded like he was dying” as she shared an emotional insight into her home life with Sir Rod Stewart. Penny, 54, celebrated her 18th wedding anniversary with 80-year-old Rod earlier this year.

The pair met in 1999 before their relationship blossomed. Rod eventually popped the question in 2005 during a romantic trip to Paris.

They tied the knot in 2007 in a luxurious ceremony at the medieval monastery La Cervara in Portofino, Italy. They share two sons, Alastair and Aiden together.

After their eldest son was born, Rod decided to call his tour the Alastair Wallace Stewart Tour as flights were scheduled around the youngster’s naps. During the tour Penny says she would keep Alastair’s Moses basket beside the couple’s bed.

However she says the baby’s colic would “terrify” her. Writing in her book Someone Like Me, Penny said: “Every afternoon at exactly 4pm he he’d give a shrill scream that sounded as though he was dying.

“In the end the only thing that would calm him was the sound of Rod’s Great American Songbook collection gently playing. I can only think that hearing it took Alastair back to the security of the womb, as I’d been in the studio to listen to Rod recording when I’d been pregnant.”

According to the NHS, a baby may have colic if they cry more than three hours a day, three days a week for at least one week. It says babies cry more in the afternoon and evening.

A colic baby may also be hard to soothe or settle, clench their fists while crying, go red in the face, and they bring their knees up to their tummy or arch their back. It can start when they are three or four weeks old and last until three to four months.

In a recent interview Penny said that Rod was initially unsure about having more children when they first began their romance. The Maggie May singer already had six children at the time.

Had he maintained his stance, Penny admits she would have been prepared to walk away from the relationship. Speaking to Saga magazine, she said: “Yes. And that would have been very hard. But we just went with the flow.”

Penny revealed that Rod has since acknowledged that, given the chance again, he would have agreed to more children with her sooner.

She explained: “Now Rod always says, ‘I wish I’d said yes [to babies] earlier, because then we could have had more children’.

“Even five years ago, we were talking about adopting, but it ended up not happening. We thought there might be too much of an age gap.

“Actually, I have three because there’s another big baby who needs my attention in a different way. I think all women would say that about their husbands.”

Sir Rod will be among the performers at the Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance 2025, which is being aired on BBC One from 9pm. Also taking to the stage will be Sam Ryder, Keala Settle and Blessing Offor.
