Poppy shirts, Remembrance Day and viral tweets

Reader comments on Claret and Hugh’s forum gave rise to some concerned fans seeking clarification last night of the club’s position regarding the traditional and important remembrance day recognition for the game against Burnley taking place today.

Whether true or ‘imagined’, a tweet seemingly from the club had gone viral suggesting that there’d be no remembrance day service.

This we believe is nonsense and remind- and reassure – supporters that West Ham United’s web site makes it abundantly clear that the club is proud to mark Remembrance Day in an appropriate, solemn manner. The whufc.com web site makes it clear:

“West Ham United will honour those who bravely laid down their lives for us with a series of poignant Remembrance activities around Saturday’s Premier League fixture with Burnley.

Before the match, the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will hold bucket collections and will be selling poppies around London Stadium.

A large poppy will cover the centre-circle throughout the warm-ups while members of the Armed Forces and representatives from Blesma, The Limbless Veterans, will provide a Guard of Honour in front of the Billy Bonds Stand and West Stand.

Blesma veteran Matty Woollard, who lost his right leg whilst serving in Afghanistan, will also speak to his fellow West Ham supporters about the importance of marking Remembrance Day and the work done by the charity and Royal British Legion in supporting veterans and their loved ones.

The Royal British Legion Band & Corps of Drums, based in Romford, will entertain the crowd with a selection of war-time tunes.

Wreaths will be laid by representatives of both clubs before kick-off. Bugler Osman Dervish will sound The Last Post before London Stadium falls silent to pay tribute to the fallen.

The Hammers will wear shirts emblazoned with a poppy which will be auctioned post-match to raise funds for charity. Further details will be communicated on whufc.com in due course.”
