Manchester City vs Liverpool preview

Liverpool have mastered Madrid this season, beating Atletico and Real at Anfield in the Champions League, but conquering Manchester looks a tougher task for the Premier League champions.

The Reds’ run of four defeats in five league games includes a shock 2-1 home loss to Manchester United and their poor away form makes them vulnerable on Sunday’s trip to Manchester City.

Three games into the season, Liverpool were six points better off than City. However, Pep Guardiola’s men have made steady progress and are odds-on to move four points clear of the champions with a victory at the Etihad Stadium.

City lost both of last season’s meetings with Liverpool by a 2-0 scoreline and have scored only twice in their last four clashes between the rivals.

But Liverpool’s defensive standards have dropped while Erling Haaland is in the form of his life so backing City to win a game featuring under 3.5 goals is an appealing bet.

Haaland’s first-half brace in last weekend’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth took his Premier League tally to 13 goals in ten starts.

Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak were expected to pose the biggest threats to Haaland in the Golden Boot race but a subdued Salah has scored only four goals and Isak’s fitness issues mean he is yet to break his duck in the league.

Arne Slot’s side were superb in the 1-0 win over Real on Tuesday – 24 hours before City brushed aside Borussia Dortmund 4-1 to make it six home wins on the spin.

But Liverpool’s only away wins were sealed by injury-time goals against ten-man Newcastle and lowly Burnley and they could have few complaints about recent defeats at Crystal Palace, Chelsea and Brentford.

Both teams have had tight games against leaders Arsenal, who were beaten 1-0 at Anfield in August and trailed City for more than 80 minutes in September’s 1-1 draw in north London.

Despite the attacking talent on show, Sunday’s clash could be cagey but City can grind out a vital victory.

Cherki’s creative class could prove decisive

Rayan Cherki had a sensational creative record for Lyon last season, providing 19 assists in Ligue 1 and the Europa League at a rate of one every 156 minutes.

The City schemer set up both of Haaland’s goals against Bournemouth and his link-up play could be the key to breaking down Liverpool.

Busy Bradley may struggle to stay out of trouble

Right-back Conor Bradley had a fine game for Liverpool against Trent Alexander-Arnold’s Real on Tuesday but he faces another huge challenge at the Etihad.

Bradley has picked up five yellow cards in just 705 minutes of first-team football this term and was also cautioned in two of his three World Cup qualifying appearances for Northern Ireland.
