Ex-Lions QB Matthew Stafford hits another career milestone in 17th season
Former Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford continues soaring up the all-time record lists in his 17th NFL season.
The former No. 1 overall pick is on pace for one of his best seasons in recent memory with the Los Angeles Rams and that includes a two-touchdown first half on Sunday against the San Francisco 49ers, the second of which marked the 400th passing touchdown of his career.
The four-yard pass to Davis Allen makes Stafford the ninth quarterback in NFL history to throw 400 touchdown passes.
Stafford moved into sole possession of ninth place on the all-time passing touchdown list earlier this season, surpassing Matt Ryan at 381.
The next quarterback on the list for Stafford to chase is longtime Pittsburgh Steelers sign caller Ben Roethlisberger at 418 touchdowns. Hall-of-Famer Dan Marino and Phllip Rivers aren’t much further at 420 and 421 passing touchdowns, respectively, at seventh and eighth.
Stafford, 37, is thriving this season, on pace for his first 4,000-yard season since 2021, which was his first season with the Rams after being traded by the Lions in exchange for Jared Goff in 2021.
If the Rams continue their surge this year, Stafford could make a bid at his career-best mark of 5,038 yards and 41 touchdowns with the Lions in 2011. He’s up to 23 touchdowns and 2,320 yards midway through his ninth game of the season with just two interceptions.
Stafford first entered the NFL in 2009 as the Lions’ top draft pick and spent 12 seasons with the franchise, becoming the team’s all-time passing yards and touchdowns leader.
