Mailbag: Trades made for this season or next?

(Editor’s Note: Time to check the mail! The DallasCowboys.com staff writers answer your questions here in ‘Mailbag’ presented by Miller Lite.)

I love the trade for Quinnen Williams, but can he and Logan Wilson do enough to significantly turn this season around? Or because the hole is now so deep, were these moves made with next season in mind? – Nicholas Foster/Ft. Worth, TX

Mickey: Well, I think both. The two trades will give this defense a necessary shot in the arm, especially by adding the big body Williams to the middle of this defense, taking some of the attention off Kenny Clark. And if the Cowboys were hoping to make these types of trades, they needed the acquisitions to be long term, which they did, now owning the rights to both players for this year and two more. Didn’t want to see them give up resources, both draft capital and cap space, just to rent a player for the remainder of this year. This seems to be a solid investment, and the only thing that could have been better is to have done these sooner in the season. I’m onboard. And you never know, because if this improves the defense, and the Cowboys can fix this offensive brownout of the past two weeks, maybe the hole will shrink. Hey, this is the NFL.
