Replay: Lake Travis defeats Westlake 31-10

Luke McBride threw for 270 yards and three touchdowns, Van Hopping rushed for 151 yards and a score and also hauled in a receiving TD and the Lake Travis defense recorded 10 sacks as the Cavs defeated Westlake for the first time since 2019 with a 31-10 win at Chaparral Stadium.
Lake Travis (8-0, 4-0 District 26-6A) held Westlake to negative-9 rushing yards and less than 250 yards of total offense as it constantly put pressure on Chaps quarterback Rees Wise.

Westin Smith caught five passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns for the Cavs, who led 13-7 at halftime after Hopping scored on a 20-yard run and an 18-yard reception.
McBride hooked up with Smith on scoring strikes of 38 and 48 yards in the third quarter.
Wise ended with 239 yards and a touchdown passing to lead Westlake (6-2, 3-1).

On the final play of the game, Lake Travis sacks Westlake quarterback Rees Wise for the 10th time. Lake Travis moves to 8-0 overall and 4-0 in District 26-6A play. Only Akins and Austin High stand between the Cavs and a perfect regular season.

Westlake forces a punt from Lake Travis, but the outcome of this game has already been decided. The Cavs will win for the first time since 2019 and do so in dominating fashion.

Lake Travis kicks a 24-yard field goal to increase its lead to 21. The Cavs seem well on the way to their first win since 2019 in this series.
Lake Travis quarterback Luke McBride hits Westin Smith on long touchdown passes of 48 and 38 yards sandwiched around a Westlake field goal to give the Cavs a 28-10 lead heading into the fourth quarter. McBride has 246 yards passing.

Lake Travis running back Vann Hopping has run for 136 yards and a TD and hauled in an 18-yard touchdown pass.
Westlake, which has created two turnovers, punted on its first five possessions before scoring on its final drive. The Chaps have less than 100 yards of offense, but the turnovers they produced have kept them in the game.
Chaps quarterback Rees Wise has 79 yards and a TD passing.

Lake Travis quarterback Luke McBride has thrown for 93 yards and a touchdown. The Cavs have sacked Wise three times and held Westlake to less than 10 yards rushing.
Westlake answers by driving 77 yards in 1:18 as Rees Wise connects with Braden Riddell on a 13-yard TD pass. Extra point is good.

After forcing a three-and-out, that included its third sack of Westlake quarterback Rees Wise on third down, the Cavs get the ball back at their own 44 and are driving. Lake Travis has a second-and-1 at the Westlake 18.
One play after Lake Travis converted a fourth-and-6, Westlake’s Pasquale Maurici forces and recovers a fumble. The Chaps defense creates its second turnover and Westlake takes over at its own 25.

The Cavs have a fresh set of downs at the Westlake 38 after effectively running the ball.
Lake Travis forces Westlake to punt for the fourth time. But it’s a good one as the Cavs take over on their own 5.

Vann Hopping sprints 20 yards up the middle untouched for the game’s first TD. The extra point is good to give the Cavs a 7-0 lead.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Cavs get the ball at the Westlake 45.

The Chaps force an incompletion on third down and get the ball back at their own 13.

Westlake retires the No. 15 of Drew Brees prior to the coin toss. Brees gives a brief speech thanking the community he grew up in.
“I love what we’ve built here and I love the legacy,” Brees said. “We won the first state title and there’s going to be a lot more — no pressure Coach Salazar.”
