A cold snap is on its way to London soon after an unseasonably mild start to November. Bonfire Night on November 5 was the mildest on record with overnight temperatures not dropping below 14.4C in Bushy Park, Teddington.

The Met Office said this weather spell was caused by warm air from continental Europe and persistent cloud cover. The North Sea played a slight role in cooling eastern parts of the UK, but the whole country has been milder than usual throughout the month.

Warm weather is expected to continue throughout this week with the mercury hovering between 15C and 16C before eventually peaking at 17C on Thursday (November 13), according to the Met Office.

As we approach the weekend temperatures will begin dropping to levels expected for mid-November, with highs of 11C-12C forecast on Saturday and Sunday. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled throughout the week.

The Met Office long range forecast suggests that once this unsettled weather clears, we will start to experience a further gradual drop in temperatures. It reads: “With time, the more unsettled conditions should gradually clear to the south, allowing a colder and more showery northerly flow of sorts to become established. In this setup, showers may be wintry over high ground, and perhaps occasionally to low levels in the far north, with also a greater risk of overnight frost.

“However, the timing of this transition is rather uncertain, and it could remain milder and wetter into the beginning of the following week, especially in the south. A general downward trend in temperature is most likely through this period, to below average in many areas beyond mid-November.”
