Sydney Swans to open the show against Carlton at the SCG

We’re set to host Carlton in an Opening Round blockbuster to mark the start of the 2026 AFL season.

The stage is set for Sydney to open the show at the SCG once again, this time hosting Carlton on Thursday, March 5 at 7:30pm, in the first match of Opening Round.

There’s a certain magic about the first bounce of a new season, and in 2026 the Swans will star in the ultimate opening night performance. The SCG makes for an iconic theatre, setting the scene for what promises to be an electrifying return of footy.

The match will mark the first for our new recruit Charlie Curnow in the red and white, facing off against his former team.

Sydney Swans CEO Matthew Pavlich said the team is thrilled to be hosting the first match of Opening Round.

“There’s nothing quite like the energy of round one, especially when you’re kicking things off for the whole competition in front of your home supporters, so this is a terrific opportunity for our club,” Pavlich said.

“The Opening Round initiative has been a huge success for northern market clubs, generating sell-out matches and sparking a buzz that creates real momentum to start the season.

“We’re excited to be hosting Carlton in the first game of Opening Round and look forward to seeing a sea of red and white descend on the SCG for what promises to be a special night.”
