CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Minn. (Northern News Now) – Crews are currently responding to Holmes Recycling Services, where multiple vehicles were reported to be on fire, following a vehicle explosion.

According to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office, authorities were dispatched around 10:40 a.m. for reports of several vehicles on fire at Holmes Recycling Services in Clinton Township.

The salvage yard is located near the intersection of County Highway 7 and State Highway 37.

Around 12 departments responded to the scene of an active fire.

Authorities believe that while a car was being compressed, a battery inside the car caused an explosion, leading to a larger fire.

According to the Chief of the Clinton Township Volunteer Fire Department, reports began with three to four vehicles on fire, then grew to about 20 vehicles.

The chief confirmed that the fire has been contained to a pile of scrap vehicles at this time. The investigation remains ongoing.

As for environmental impact, the St. Louis County emergency management team is on scene evaluating runoff. They said the wind direction is not causing air quality concerns.

As of noon on Tuesday, crews have Highway 7 closed for the firefight.
