Earthquake shakes Cyprus, epicenter in Paphos

A moderate earthquake struck Cyprus on Tuesday, shaking homes and offices across the island. The tremor, which measured 5.7 on the Richter scale, had its epicenter in the coastal district of Paphos, according to initial estimates.
The quake was felt in several areas, including Nicosia, Limassol, and Larnaca, with residents reporting light to moderate shaking that lasted only a few seconds.
So far, there have been no immediate reports of injuries or serious damage, though authorities are monitoring the situation and collecting information from local emergency services.
Cyprus sits in a seismically active zone, and mild earthquakes are not uncommon, particularly along the island’s southern coastline. However, tremors above magnitude 5 are strong enough to cause concern, especially in densely populated areas.
The Department of Geological Survey said more details will be released once data from monitoring stations are analyzed.
