BBC Radio 2 presenter dies aged 87 after career spanning more than five decades

LEGENDARY BBC and LBC presenter Brian Hayes has passed away at the age of 87.

The renowned radio personality’s career spanned five decades and saw him lead some of the most influential radio output of his era.

Hayes was born in Perth, Western Australia in 1937, and began working in newspapers and broadcasting.

The legendary broadcaster moved to Britain in the early 1970s and continued his career on the airwaves.

He joined Capital Radio as a producer at the station’s launch in 1973 before moving on air.

The broadcaster would go on to make a name for himself presenting the morning interview and phone-in show on LBC radio.

When he left LBC in 1990, Hayes moved to BBC Radio 2 to present the breakfast programme Good Morning UK!

Hayes presented the weekly phone-in Hayes over Britain on BBC Radio 2 in the 1990s, winning a Gold Sony Radio Award for Best Phone-In.

He worked on BBC Radio 5 Live until 2006, and BBC Radio 4, on various programmes including Not Today, Thank You.

During the 2000s, he presented Friday nights on BBC Radio 5 Live and on Sunday nights he returned to LBC.

Hayes was credited with helping establish the modern template for conversational and confrontational phone-in broadcasting.

He famously said he treated callers “as real people with something to say.”

Hayes tragically died at the age of 87 on November 30, 2025.
