Japanese media are paying attention to whether Japanese traditional ssireum sumo will allow women to enter the ssireum board, the “golden girl zone” in the era of female prime minister.

The Asahi Shimbun reported on the 3rd that Prime Minister Takaichi Sanae personally asked the Sumo Association what he would do if he wanted to present the “Bae instead of Cabinet Prime Minister” trophy to the winner and received an answer, “Our mission is to inherit traditional culture.”

According to the newspaper, the Sumo Association has maintained the traditional notion that the sumo wrestling board, called “dohyo,” is a space where women should not enter.

In 1990, Moriyama Mayumi, the first female cabinet secretary, announced that she would award the trophy on behalf of the prime minister, but was rejected. At the time, the chairman of the association was reported to have said, “It is okay to have at least one such society.”

As such, the Sumo Association has thoroughly rejected women’s filial piety by advocating tradition.

As criticism was raised about this, the Sumo Association established an “investigation committee on women and ssireum boards” in 2019 to review it. However, it has not yet reached a conclusion, the newspaper said.
