Jasmine Harman has opened up about the terrifying moment her husband Jon suffered a heart attack at just 45 years old, while they were renovating their new home in Spain.

The A Place In The Sun presenter and her husband, parents to Joy, 12, and Albion, nine, have been sharing their renovation journey in Estepona on a new daily Channel 4 series. However, today’s episode took a harrowing turn when Jon was filmed being rushed to hospital after falling ill.

In the dramatic scenes aired this afternoon, doctors informed Jon that he had experienced a heart attack.

Earlier in the episode, Jon had revealed that heart problems are prevalent in his family. Tragically, his sister Jo passed away unexpectedly in 2016 at the age of 40 due to sudden arrhythmic death syndrome.

Just a few weeks later in May, Jon himself suffered a heart attack, reports the Mirror.

In an exclusive interview about the ordeal, Jasmine shared that Jon is thankfully recovering, but admitted that the frightening incident has prompted her to reevaluate her life – particularly following the loss of several close friends, including fellow A Place In The Sun host Jonnie Irwin.

Jonnie sadly lost his fight with cancer in February 2024 at the tender age of 50. Alongside dealing with the loss of Jon’s sister, the couple have also been grappling with the death of Hairy Bikers star Dave Myers, who passed away last year.

Jon had worked alongside Dave for many years, and during the early stages of the renovation series, his widow Lili was captured on camera whilst visiting the couple’s project.

Jasmine – who celebrates her 50th birthday this week – exclusively reveals to the Mirror: “Jon is fine now and he is back working.

“I know this sounds strange but even with the background of what could have happened and worrying he could have died; it makes you feel lucky he just had a mild heart attack and everything is fine.

“But the challenges life throws at you has made me take things in my stride a lot better than I used to.”

Jon’s cardiac episode is the primary reason why, she continues to confess, the renovation venture proved so demanding.

Before her new series launched, she had hinted it had become a ‘nightmare’ – though she kept the reasons behind this private until now.

She explains the ordeal has transformed her from being such a ‘control freak’, stating: “You can’t control anything in life unfortunately, except your own responses to situations. I used to be quite a control freak but now I feel I am able to go much more with the flow and not let things get under my skin.”

Remembering the moment Jon, now 46, began feeling unwell in May when the episode occurred, Jasmine recalls: “We’d just had lunch and he said he started to feel funny and strange.

“He went to lie down but he then started to get very agitated and said there was a tightening in his chest. He was having a bit of trouble breathing and everything that was touching him was annoying him. I immediately called the ambulance as soon as he said he felt funny.”

Earlier in January, Jon had fractured his left leg while playing padel tennis, which led to him developing thrombosis during his recovery.

Despite the added concern of knowing about his thrombosis, Jasmine remained composed. She recalls: “As he had thrombosis from the leg break, it was obviously scary but I don’t know why, something inside me was saying: ‘don’t panic, it’s going to be fine’. I was very calm.”

Upon their arrival at the Spanish hospital, doctors were quick to put Jon at ease. “They told us he’d had a mild heart attack and immediately started doing some tests,” she elaborates.

“Given Jon’s family history, he’d already been undergoing regular screenings. Now they are conducting further investigations and keeping a close watch on him. He’s on medication and they will continue to monitor him regularly.”

Jasmine admits that the experience has taught her not to fret over trivial matters. “It’s definitely taught me a lot about how responses shape our experience to whatever happens,” she concludes.

“There was a time if I was late for the school drop off, I would get stressed and furious. Now I’m like, ‘OK, the traffic is bad but we can’t help it’. Life is what you make of it. If you don’t ever take a chance or a risk, like we did by moving to Spain, you will never do anything new. It is worth it to dream big and take a risk that your heart tells you to do.”

Her mum Vasoulla, who travelled out from the UK to support the family during their time of crisis, proved invaluable, Jasmine reveals.

She elaborates: “With Jon also breaking his leg, now when I look back on everything, I don’t know how I did it. What I do know is I wouldn’t have been able to do it without my mum. When she arrived, I let go of all the pressure and the stress and said: ‘right I need to focus on things’ and do it in a way to not overwhelm or burn myself out.”

She emphasises they harbour no regrets about relocating to Spain, a decision made partly due to the devastating loss of Jon’s sister nine years ago.

“She was fit, well and very healthy,” reveals Jasmine. “It was a very big shock.

“We are really enjoying living in Spain. We are now doing the stuff we wouldn’t be doing if we were still in London and so it is the lifestyle that we’ve appreciated so much.”

Will she ever return to the UK now?

“Jon and I have never been big planners,” she responds. “Who knows? We will go with the flow.

“Of course, we all miss our friends but we have been making new friends and the kids are really happy.”

She pauses, grins and then regarding the move, she says: “A renovation can be challenging but it can also be so rewarding. It’s important to go with the flow and be grateful for every experience.”

Looking ahead and considering all she has endured; Jasmine is now resolved to savour every moment of her time in Spain.

She’s also eager to film new episodes of the show that catapulted her to fame. Despite the unexpected twists and turns, she discloses her desire to assist others who wish to transform an old building into their dream home.

“Maybe I could help other people renovate their place in the sun,” Jasmine suggests. “I love the human stories behind A Place In The Sun and the house hunt is a vehicle to get to know their story, why they decided to do it and why they deserve it.

“Anything I can do to help change people’s lives and be brave, I’m up for it.”
