Popular Halifax Mooseheads anthem singer dies after brain cancer diagnosis

Long-time Halifax Mooseheads anthem signer Peter Baylis has passed away after battling brain cancer.

A man whose voice was familiar to thousands of Halifax Mooseheads fans has died after a brain cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

The Mooseheads said Peter Baylis, who became their national anthem singer 15 years ago, recently passed away.

“His unwavering dedication and contagious passion left an enduring mark on our organization and the fans in Moose Country,” the Mooseheads said in a social media post. “Our condolences go out to Peter’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.”

Baylis, who was a member of the “Hopping Penguins” in the 1990s, was closely involved in the Halifax restaurant scene before joining the Mooseheads.

“I can feel comfortable that I left my mark in Halifax through entertainment, through hospitality, and I’m proud of my city,” he said in a previous interview with CTV News Atlantic. “I love my country, hence the singing of the anthems.”

In May, Baylis was diagnosed glioblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. A GoFundMe campaign set up to help him cover costs during treatment raised more than $65,000.

“I’m seeing sunshine, blue sky, and my brother walking the dog in the neighbourhood, and I’m going, ‘Hey man, you know what? This is joy,’” he said. “So, I’m going to choose to embrace that instead of thinking about the heavy. This is what we got.

“We only have what we have right now.”
