South Africa were dismissed for 159 despite a bright start that saw them reach 57 without loss, making swift progress after choosing to bat on a pitch offering inconsistent bounce. Yet within the space of 102 runs and all ten wickets, India had firmly seized control.
The openers looked composed early on—Rickelton scoring freely while Markram needed 23 balls to get underway—before a burst of boundaries lifted the tempo. Jasprit Bumrah’s extended opening spell eventually paid off in his sixth over, as he removed both openers in quick succession. Bavuma, returning to the Test side, soon followed, leaving South Africa reeling at 71 for 3 and undoing much of their early graft.
Mulder, de Zorzi and Kyle Verreynne all got starts but departed in similar fashion, unable to build on their foundations. Tristan Stubbs attempted to hold the innings together with the lower order, but once Bumrah returned after tea, the tail was swiftly dismantled. His incisive spell wrapped up the innings, leaving South Africa all out for 159.
