Freezing rain is expected in southern Quebec this weekend, according to a special weather statement issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada.

Ice could accumulate to up to 10 millimetres overnight Saturday to Sunday in areas such as the Ottawa Valley, Laurentians, Lanaudière, greater Montreal and Lower Richelieu regions.

Pavements, sidewalks and surfaces will become icy and slippery, the weather agency says, noting road conditions could be difficult.

This comes as, barring a last-minute deal, there will be no bus or Metro service this weekend in Montreal.

The province’s labour tribunal, the Tribunal administratif du travail, released a ruling late Wednesday night, allowing the union representing bus drivers, Metro operators and station agents to completely shut down public transit on Saturday and Sunday.

The forecasted freezing rain also comes after a heavy snowstorm that knocked out power to hundreds of thousands in Quebec overnight Tuesday to Wednesday. Heavy snow lead to branches and trees falling across the province, affecting the electric lines.
