Brit woman, 85, killed as ‘TORNADO’ smashes into caravan park & hotel in hols hotspot Albufeira leaving 28 injured

A BRIT woman has been killed after a terrifying “tornado” swept through a Portuguese holiday hotspot campsite and injured 28 others.

The 85-year-old was staying on the site near Albufeira on the Algarve when the freak twister began whipping debris into the air.

Holidaymakers including dozens of Brits ran for cover as the deadly storm tore through the site called HolaCamp and a nearby hotel – flinging masonry into the air and flipping cars.

Authorities said 28 were injured and one person was reported missing as the area was left devastated.

But the missing person was later found dead under rubble and identified as the British pensioner, whose name has not yet been released.

Officials from Portugal‘s weather agency said there was a “high probability” it was a tornado.

Horrifying images showed the extent of the twister’s damage – with homes completely reduced to rubble.

Shocking footage shows the aftermath of the suspected tornado – as terrified campers stood in awe amid the wreckage.

The “extreme wind phenomenon” at 10.07am was also said to be linked to Storm Claudia which rocked the UK on Friday, a Civil Protection source said on Saturday.

A weather agency source said: “It was a phenomenon of strong winds, an extreme wind phenomenon, that affected two units, a campsite and a hotel unit.”

Most of the injuries during Saturday’s tornado were said to be at the Eden Hotel where 19 were injured including one seriously.

At the campsite two were seriously hurt while one was found dead later after being trapped inside a bungalow.

But police later confirmed that a total of 28 people had been hurt including Portuguese, British and Spanish nationals aged between six and 86.

Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expressed his “solidarity with the family of the victim who died as a result of Storm Claudia’s passage this morning in Albufeira”.

Albufeira mayor Rui Cristina said: “From the outset, I have been monitoring the situation caused by the windstorm that hit our municipality.

“Today, I visited the most affected areas, including the campsite, where the scene is truly devastating.”

He added: “There are reports of several injuries and one fatality, an 85-year-old British national.

“On behalf of myself and the municipality, I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends.

“We are working with all municipal resources and civil protection agencies to support the victims and restore safety and normality as quickly as possible.”

Storm Claudia has also torn up parts of the UK – with Brits bracing for more rain and flooding this weekend.

A major incident was declared in Britain while footage showed motorists being pulled from flooded cars as the weather phenomenon left roads “like rivers”.
