Türkiye to host Bulgaria in Bursa with World Cup play-off place at stake

Türkiye’s National Football Team will take on Bulgaria in Bursa in their fifth match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup European Qualifiers Group E, needing points to make sure of a top-two finish and secure a place in the play-offs. The match will be played at Ataturk Sports Complex Matli Stadium, kicking off at 08:00 p.m. local time and broadcast live on Turkish TV channel TV8, while the group’s other fixture will see Georgia host leaders Spain at the same time.
Before this round of games, Spain sit on top of Group E with four wins from four and 12 points, while Türkiye are second on 9 points and Georgia are third on 3. Bulgaria are yet to collect a point and lie at the bottom of the standings. Any points gained by Türkiye against Bulgaria will guarantee that the national side end the group stage in the top two and therefore claim at least a play-off berth.

European route to 2026 World Cup shaped by play-offs
The 2026 World Cup will be staged in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with 48 teams involved in the final tournament. From Europe, 16 national teams will take part after the qualifying campaign comes to an end in November.
According to the format laid out for the European qualifiers, the 12 group winners will book their tickets directly to the World Cup. The remaining four European places will then be decided in March 2026 through play-offs, which will bring together the 12 group runners-up and four more national teams advancing from the UEFA Nations League. These 16 teams will compete for the last four available European slots at the finals.
National team step out for their 646th international
The Bulgaria match will also mark another milestone for the Turkish national team, as the side play their 646th international fixture in 102 years. Over that period, Türkiye have contested 645 games, 358 of them official and 287 friendly. The national team have recorded 254 wins, 150 draws and 241 defeats, with one of the victories awarded by forfeit.
Across these matches, Türkiye have played 277 times away from home, 278 times on their own soil and 90 times on neutral grounds. Over the years, the team have scored 891 goals, three of them through forfeit decisions, and have conceded 924. The national side have faced opponents from 92 different countries, with 559 matches against European teams, 34 against Asian sides, 24 against African nations, 25 against teams from the Americas and 3 against representatives of Oceania.
The only forfeit win in this history came against Greece. A friendly match played on 17 November 2015 at Basaksehir Fatih Terim Stadium originally ended 0-0, but around six months later FIFA decided to award a 3-0 result to Türkiye after ruling that Greece had fielded an ineligible player. On the other hand, a 6-1 win away to Kosovo on 21 May 2014 is not counted in the official statistics, as Kosovo were not yet a member of FIFA and UEFA on that date.
