Seth Meyers and Andy Samberg Feuded over a Roots Sweater

The SNL gang certainly had an eventful summer while filming Hot Rod in Vancouver in 2006, when Seth Meyers injured his ankle by turning left too much on the Seawall and the Lonely Island were inspired by a local sushi restaurant’s “miso horny” merch. Now, they’ve revealed how Meyers and Andy Samberg ended up feuding over a Roots sweater.

“Do you remember how mad you were the one time we took a seaplane to Vancouver Island and we went to a store and I wanted to buy the same sweater as you?” Meyers asked Samberg on the latest episode of The Lonely Island and Seth Meyers Podcast.

Samberg protested, saying that they saw each other too often to own the same sweater. “You were really, genuinely mad,” Meyers recalled. “I’m like, ‘We can get away with it.’ You were like, ‘No!’ I’m like, ‘We won’t wear it on the same day.’ You’re like, ‘It’ll look like you’re wearing my sweater!'”

Seemingly still a little annoyed about it, Samberg asked, “And do you remember what you did? Seth was like, ‘Fine, fine, I won’t.’ And then he bought it without telling me, and then he wore it as soon as we got back! We went out to dinner and he was wearing it. I was like, ‘God damn it!'”

Samberg concluded, “It was a good burn.”

The episode’s special guest, writer Jonathan Krisel, chimed in with a separate story about SNL founder Lorne Michaels taking him to the Roots store in Toronto and letting him select any clothing item he wanted, because Michaels is apparently friends with the owner of Roots. Clearly, SNL’s Roots run deep!
