It was Kelce’s 84th career touchdown, moving him past Priest Holmes for most in Chiefs history. The legendary running back had congratulated him late last month on tying the record:
“You’re in good company, I can definitely say that. It’s pretty exciting to see what’s taken place as a phenomenon with the Chiefs right now, and it’s gonna be pretty awesome when he gets the chance to go across that threshold and get that 84th touchdown.”
The Chiefs would eventually lose 22-19.
Rob Gronkowski sounds off on Travis Kelce comparison
The body of work that Travis Kelce will leave when he retires is something that might not be surpassed in this lifetime: three Super Bowl titles, seven straight thousand-yard seasons and All-Pro selections, ten Pro Bowls, and multiple league and franchise records.
It has drawn comparisons to Rob Gronkowski, who thinks that it has allowed Patrick Mahomes’ favorite target to surpass him in certain aspects. On Friday’s episode of Dan Patrick’s eponymous show, he said:
“In many ways, Travis Kelce is better than myself and in many ways, I would say that I’m better than Travis Kelce. There are so many variables and tangibles that go into it because we’re kind of different players, but we play the same position still.”
He then made a call-back to a quote once used by Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe:
“I’m steak and he’s sushi. It’s just what you want that night for dinner. They’re both great, but they’re both totally different, and they taste different and they’re different on your palate.”
He concluded:
“If I’m in a package where it’s an old-school offense, running the ball, play-action, being in the trenches and beating down the other team, I would take myself. But in this day and era with the offense that Travis Kelce is in, I feel like he fits way better.”
The Chiefs’ next game will be against the Indianapolis Colts next Sunday. Kickoff is at 12 pm CT on CBS.
