Northern Ireland vs Luxembourg preview

It wasn’t to be for Northern Ireland on Friday as they lost 1-0 to Slovakia ensuring they cannot finish in the top two of Group A.

The Slovaks’ opening 2-0 win over Germany blew the section wide open and those nations are tied on 12 points heading into their final fixture showdown, with the winner securing automatic qualification to the World Cup, and the loser heading into March’s playoffs.

Despite the disappointment that followed substitute Tomas Bobcek’s stoppage-time winner in Kosice, there was a consolation for Michael O’Neill’s men.

Results elsewhere mean they will take one of the four playoff places available via Nations League performances.

O’Neill will be looking to rouse his troops and conclude what has been another encouraging campaign by beating their final Group A opponents, Luxembourg, before planning for his country’s shot at a first World Cup appearance since 1986.

There was a spell when Les Lions Rouges appeared to have fallen on a formula for developing players and securing results, drawing with France in 2017 and finishing third in their qualifying section for Euro 2024.

They even beat Sweden in a friendly this March but have failed to pick up a point in five Group A games, including a 3-1 home loss to Northern Ireland in September.

Aiman Dardari’s goal that day is their only one in qualifying and Jeff Strasser, who succeeded Luc Holtz as coach in August, has seen his side become also-rans in an otherwise competitive pool.

Luxembourg have failed to score in away defeats to Germany and Slovakia and were again nilled in Friday’s 2-0 home loss to the Germans.

Monday’s match may not be a classic, but Northern Ireland are good enough to win with an accompanying clean sheet.

Sinani always happy to shoot

That’s not to say Luxembourg don’t pose a threat, and former Norwich and Huddersfield forward Danel Sinani has had 12 attempts on goal in qualifying.

Of that dozen, only three were on target but he may get opportunities on Monday, with a makeshift Northern Ireland midfield potentially affording him more space to be a threat.

Repeat result could in the offing

Luxembourg lost 2-0 in Belfast last year when the pair met in the Nations League and also went down 1-0 at Windsor Park in 2019.

Having also beaten Slovakia 2-0 at home in October, that looks a likely outcome to follow on Monday.
