Canada manager Marsch confirms Jones will start vs. Venezuela

Alfie Jones will make his Canada debut on Tuesday, Jesse Marsch confirmed.

The CanMNT manager said that the Middlesbrough defender was taking his citizenship oath on Monday afternoon.

“I want to acknowledge a lot of people inside our organization, as well as the Canadian government, who helped us push this through in a respectful way, but in a way that showed urgency and importance for Alfie and for our team and for our preparation for the World Cup” Marsch said ahead of Tuesday’s match with Venezuela in Florida.

Jones, 28, is eligible to play for Canada through a grandparent. The Bristol, England-born centre-back is in his first season at the Riverside. He has one goal in 14 appearances for Boro this season.

Canada is coming off of a scoreless draw with Ecuador in Toronto on Thursday. The team played with 10 men for a majority of the match after a straight red to Ali Ahmed in the sixth minute. The match in Fort Lauderdale on Tuesday is Canada’s final game of 2025.
