Huge BBC thriller and A-list stars to return for third series after 8 years

SURANNE Jones is returning to star in a third series of Doctor Foster after the hit thriller’s eight-year absence from TV.

The actress will reprise the lead role of Gemma Foster in the BBC One drama about a scorned GP who takes revenge on her cheating husband, played by Bertie Carvel.

Ex-Corrie star Suranne, 47, will be at the centre of a story in which her son, Tom, a teenager in the last season in 2017, returns to the fractious family home as an adult.

Fans had feared so long had passed since the previous series, it might have been permanently axed.

But a TV insider said: “There was always a sense of unfinished business with Doctor Foster, as the storyline could easily roll on and on.

“It went out on a massive high, too, with around eight million tuning in every week to watch the drama unfold between the three lead characters.

“It was felt enough time had passed since its last outing — but not too much that fans weren’t still eager to return to the show.”

Filming is due to start next year, with a view to it potentially airing at the end of 2026 or early 2027.

It was a hit when the first series was shown in 2015 — and the follow-up in 2017 proved just as popular.

The last one ended with Tom, played by Tom Taylor, running away from his warring parents, and his mother delivering a monologue to him saying: “I’m here. Tom, I’m your mum. I’m sorry and I’m here.

“I’ll always be here waiting. When you want to come back. Whenever you want to come back.”

Doctor Foster remains one of the BBC’s biggest drama hits of the past decade, along with the likes of Peaky Blinders and Line of Duty.

It also helped launch the career of Jodie Comer, who played Gemma’s love rival, Kate Parks.

It is not clear yet whether Jodie, 32, Bertie, 48, or Tom, now 24, will return.

Bertie is about to play Cornelius Fudge in the TV adaptation of the Harry Potter novels.
