Revealed: First pictures of Birmingham City’s new stadium

More than 15,000 people watched the first images of Birmingham City‘s new stadium get revealed on a live stream from an event in Digbeth, Birmingham.

The club’s owners are investing $3 billion into a new sports quarter in the city, with a 60,000+ seat stadium designed by Thomas Heatherwick and David Manika.

The club say the stadium, which should be ready by 2030, will be visible from 40 miles away.

The chimney-style roof supports are supposed to call back to the brick works of Birmingham’s industrial history.

The club are calling it the “Powerhouse Stadium” and says that it will become the “beating heart of Birmingham.”

After the first images of the new stadium, fans watching the announcement live in person began singing the club’s anthem, “Keep Right on To The End Of The Road”.

Tom Wagner, the club’s owner, has previously said of the design:

“We felt [the design] really celebrated not only the history of the club but more importantly the history of Birmingham and ties together what we’re trying to do in the future with the incredible past of the city of a 1000 trades.”

The club’s owners, Knighthead bought the former 48-acre Wheels motor-racing site in Bordesley Green for the major development.

The site will have training facilities, a new academy, community pitches and commercial space to support local businesses.

It will be the new home for training for all of the club’s teams, and is expected to create around 3,000 local jobs.

Watch as director Steven Knight and co-owner Tom Wagner spoke about the plans at the investment event at Edgbaston in October.
