S&P 500 closes flat amid tug-of-war over valuations, rate cuts

US equities swung in the final session of the week in New York amid a continuing debate over tech valuations and the heightening prospect of a rate cut pause next month. The S&P 500 ended 0.05 per cent lower.
Dip buyers appeared mid-morning after an initial opening swoon, apparently heeding the call from among others Wedbush Securities’ Dan Ives, who said this week’s tech sell-off represented a buying opportunity. He also forecast a “major” rally in the sector through the end of December.
