Celebrate a remarkable visionary who helps children live with awareness and joy.

Some people bring light wherever they go. Goldie Hawn has spent her life sharing that light through laughter, compassion, and a deep belief in our shared humanity.

On her birthday, and every day, we celebrate the performer who made audiences laugh on Laugh In and shine in Cactus Flower, Private Benjamin, and The First Wives Club, and we honor the visionary who has dedicated decades to helping children and families learn how to live with greater calm, awareness, and joy.

The Goldie Hawn Foundation and her MindUP program have quietly changed education around the world. What began as a single question, “How can children learn to find peace and focus in an anxious world,” MindUP is now included in more than 40 countries, reaching millions of students each year, helping children understand how their brains work and how to care for their emotions with mindfulness and gratitude (MindUP Foundation, 2023).

The Music Within

Music has always been part of Goldie’s story. Her father, Edward Hawn, played in a local band, filling her childhood home with rhythm and laughter. Those early sounds shaped her spirit. Goldie carried that sense of play and timing into every film, every smile, every moment she shared with an audience. She released her own album, Goldie, in 1972—a reflection of curiosity and joy that continues to define her life.

Music runs through her work not just as entertainment, but as an energy of connection. Her laughter has rhythm, her generosity has tone, and her compassion resonates like a well-tuned chord. Goldie listens deeply, responds fully, and always leads with empathy.

A Legacy of Caring

“The only thing that will bring you happiness is giving.” Her life reflects that truth. She gives her time, her voice, and her energy to the well-being of children. She reminds us that happiness is not found in applause but in awareness, one mindful breath, one kind act, one shared moment at a time.

The Broadway Moment

Years ago, we had the privilege of attending a Broadway show with Goldie. We arrived a few minutes late. The lights had already dimmed, and the performers were waiting for the audience to settle. You could feel a collective pause, a flicker of impatience. Then, from the darkened theater, a single voice called out:

“We love you, Goldie!”

The audience erupted in applause. The moment transformed from tension to joy. Goldie smiled, quiet and gracious, and took her seat. No fanfare. No drama. Just warmth. The show began and the entire theater felt lighter. That simple moment captured her presence, joy, and connection with others.

The Family That Grounds the Light

Family remains at the heart of Goldie’s life. To her children, she is Mommy or mom. To her grandchildren, she is Gogo. To her friends, she is steadfast and genuine. Her home is filled with music, gratitude, and laughter. Simple rituals reflect her belief that the most profound happiness comes from love and connection.

Those who know her best often describe her as both radiant and grounded. Her success has never been only about talent; it has been about kindness. She approaches fame as a form of service. Her generosity of spirit reminds us that leadership begins with empathy and that true joy often comes from lifting others.

One of the first times our family met Goldie was at The Garage in the West Village, a beloved brunch jazz haunt. The restaurant was alive with noise and wonderful chaos, the band swinging through standards as plates clattered and conversations swelled.

Amid the music and accompanying cacophony of a busy club, Goldie held Ethan, the youngest among us. Her back to the room, swaying gently, her voice was soft and steady against the rhythm of the jazz. They looked as if they breathed in unison, her quiet humming calming him.

Our paths would merge through music and MindUP. In that moment, the connection among sound, presence, and peace was clear. The power of her music and peace brings infectious joy, laughter, and calm to families across the world.

MindUP and the Science of Joy

MindUP’s curriculum blends neuroscience with compassion. Students learn how their brains respond to stress, how to pause before reacting, and how to shift attention with intention. When children practice these skills, their levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, decrease, while optimism and prosocial behavior increase (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015).

Goldie’s greatest legacy may be the one that unfolds quietly in classrooms each day. MindUP’s curriculum helps children and teachers practice mindfulness, gratitude, and optimism while learning about the brain’s role in emotion and attention. The program’s effectiveness has been supported by independent studies showing improvements in emotional regulation, empathy, and academic engagement (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015; Crooks et al., 2020).

Children who participated in MindUP demonstrated stronger executive function, less stress, and greater compassion for others (Schonert-Reichl et al., 2015). Teachers have described calmer classrooms, improved focus, and deeper relationships with students (CASEL, 2022).

MindUP nurtures emotional granularity, the ability to recognize and name one’s feelings. This skill improves mental health, decision-making, and empathy. Teachers often note that once students learn to calm their minds, their capacity for curiosity and creativity expands.

Goldie anticipated much of what neuroscience now confirms: awareness changes the brain. Gratitude, breathing, and kindness are not just pleasant ideas; they are scientifically supported strategies for well-being (Weare, 2018).

The Resonance of a Joyful Mind

Goldie Hawn embodies what we call in Resonant Minds a “harmonic leader”—a person who listens deeply, acts intentionally, and moves through the world in rhythm with others. She unites humor and humanity, performance and purpose. Through her life and work, she has shown that mindfulness and laughter are both pathways to peace.

Her message feels especially relevant now. In an age of constant noise and distraction, Goldie’s vision through MindUP offers a reminder that awareness and joy are teachable. When children learn to pause, breathe, and listen, they begin to understand that calm is not the absence of sound—it is the music of attention.

For Goldie, happiness is a choice, not a destination. She has proven that truth every day, not through perfection, but through presence.

On your birthday, we thank you for the laughter, the light, and the love you bring to every room you enter.

With love and gratitude from those of us honored to call you a friend and from all who keep learning with you and from you.

Happy Birthday, Goldie
