Thierno Barry has replaced Beto for Everton’s game at Sunderland as David Moyes looks for what would be a valuable three points.

The 23-year-old will continue his search for a first competitive goal since joining from Villarreal in the summer. His nine Premier League appearances have yielded some good moments – particularly his role in the build up to both goals in the 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion.

But this will be his first start since the win over Crystal Palace last month – Everton’s most recent victory – as Moyes continues to try and find goals from his frontline forwards. Beto, who Barry replaces, has just two goals for the campaign to date and his only goal in the league came at Molineux at the end of August.

The Guinea-Bissau international falls out of the starting line-up after a run of appearances in which he has struggled to make an impact. The 27-year-old missed big chances in Everton’s two most recent matches, against Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur. Both games ended in defeat.

While Beto has lost his place, Moyes has kept faith in the rest of what has become his favoured starting XI. That means Jake O’Brien will continue to operate out of position at right back, a role he has held since January and retains despite some calls to move James Garner into that slot.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall will also stay in the middle for the Blues. He is likely to continue to operate between Iliman Ndiaye and Jack Grealish in an attacking midfield that has created chances but has not been able to turn possession into points in recent games.

Carlos Alcaraz and Merlin Rohl – two players who some supporters have called to be given greater exposure by Moyes – are on a bench that also includes Tyler Dibling, the club’s biggest signing of the summer and another player who has remained on the periphery so far this season.

Starting XI: Pickford; O’Brien, Tarkowski, Keane, Mykolenko; Gueye, Garner; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Barry

Bench: Travers, Coleman, Beto, Alcaraz, Dibling, Rohl, Aznou, Iroegbunam, McNeil
