Only one player out of the core group making up the Dallas Stars roster is missing a contract for next season.

Jason Roberston is a restricted free agent after this season, but his play lately is leaving little doubt about a contract extension for him. Robertson is rolling as of late, being named the NHL’s First Star of last week.

Robertson is part of the Stars’ elite, proving himself with eight goals over the last four games, amongst a thriving season.

The Stars have to extend his contract as his services are needed for the franchise moving forward.

First Star of the Week

Robertson is the NHL’s best player over the last week, scoring six goals in eight games. He is pulling apart goaltenders like warm bread with a 33.3% shooting percentage over that time. He is tied with the team lead for 11 goals, combining his 14 assists to make 25 points.

Having a presence like him every night means he is a threat to score out there. Adapting to the developing play is helping move pucks down ice and on net. He boosts opportunities to score every shift.

Every major Stars component is signed to an extension except Robertson. The salary cap is going up again next season, leaving Jim Nill some wiggle room in terms of space. The big boys are getting the big bucks. Mikko Rantanen has 27 points in 20 games, leaving Robertson close behind in team stats. He’s too big a piece to let go. The Stars’ championship window is open for the next several years.

Robertson is one of those players who is important to any team. He is one of those players you center a franchise around.

His exceptionality on the ice nets him a career total of 419 points in 394 games. He is a player you need to extend no matter what. Robertson cannot wear any other jersey since he is a key component for the Stars.

Robertson is an irreplaceable player who provides leadership on and off the ice. There is a possibility that he is the future captain of this team once Jamie Benn leaves. Many teams will want to offer him a contract in restricted free agency. Even a bridge deal for two years will push negotiations back until the salary cap takes off. Robertson is not one of those players you let walk for peanuts, if at all.

This team’s championship window will remain open for several years with him on the team. Players who are integral parts of an organization don’t come along often in the form of Robertson.

The Stars need to extend him before time runs out.
