Sheffield Wednesday and Sheffield United will meet in the 134th Steel City derby at Hillsborough on Sunday and there will be plenty at stake as both teams languish in the Championship’s bottom three.

The Owls are rooted to the bottom of the standings, not helped by their ongoing off-field issues which resulted in a 12-point deduction, and even a win against their city neighbours would not be enough to move them back into a positive points total.

While Henrik Pedersen’s side were expected to struggle, it is a surprise to see the Blades marooned in the relegation zone after they only just missed out on promotion last season.

Sheffield Wednesday vs Sheffield United preview

It is hard to remember a Steel City derby when both teams were at such a low ebb and the pressure will be on both Wednesday and United to get a positive result to kickstart their seasons.

The rock-bottom Owls are winless in nine matches and are one of only two Championship teams – alongside fellow strugglers Norwich – yet to pick up a home success.

Wednesday are also the lowest home scorers in the division, netting just three goals in eight games, while the only team to have notched fewer times in the second tier overall are their rivals from across the city.

United have claimed just 11 league goals this season and their lack of firepower was emphasised in their goalless draw with QPR before the international break, a match in which they mustered just three shots on target.

Patrick Bamford has been signed to try to improve their scoring woes, but the former Leeds ace has not played competitively since May and is unlikely to start this game.

Given the lack of goals in both camps – United’s Callum O’Hare is the leading scorer in either squad with just four league goals – this may be a contest lacking in attacking quality, and that is backed up by the recent meetings between the pair.

The last five head-to-heads have produced a meagre total of just two goals, both scored by the Blades, and Wednesday’s last goal against their rivals came in 2017, while their last win in the fixture was in 2012.

Bannan fired up for derby clash

Wednesday’s ongoing struggles will be particularly hurtful for long-serving captain Barry Bannan, who has continued to give his all and is the club’s leading scorer with three goals.

Bannan has also picked up more cards than any other Owls player, the latest of which came at Southampton before the international break, and he could feel the wrath of the referee once more on derby day.

Familiar derby feel

United are unbeaten in the last six Steel City derbies and they did the double over Wednesday last season, winning both meetings 1-0.

Tyrese Campbell scored the winner at Bramall Lane in November 2024, while the now-departed Rhian Brewster was the matchwinner when the teams last locked horns at Hillsborough in March. A third-successive 1-0 derby win for the Blades could be on the cards.

Sheffield United to win

The Blades have an impressive record in this fixture, last losing to their city rivals in 2012, and they can pile more home misery on Wednesday, who have not won at Hillsborough since April.

One or both teams not to score

At least one team have failed to score in the last five Steel City derbies. Wednesday have drawn a blank in six of their ten  home matches across all competitions this season and United were shut out against QPR last time out.

Bailey Cadamarteri to have three or more shots

Bailey Cadamarteri has had ten efforts at goal in his last two Championship starts and he could fire off at least three more on derby day.
