Rio rejected Tomago smelter bailout offer ahead of shutdown talks

Australia’s biggest aluminium smelter, Tomago, has started a consultation process with employees for the plant’s potential closure in just over three years, despite a government bailout offer to keep it operating.

Industry Minister Tim Ayres confirmed on Tuesday that the federal and NSW governments had made a secret offer of support in recent weeks, following months of speculation about the smelter’s viability due to high energy costs.
