Arsenal vs Tottenham preview
Premier League leaders Arsenal were involved in a chaotic 2-2 draw away at Sunderland in their final outing before the international break but normal service could resume for the Gunners in the first north London derby of the season.
Mikel Arteta’s side had been churning out wins to nil for fun prior to that setback at the Stadium of Light and kept eight consecutive clean sheets.
Arsenal have been breached only once in five Premier League outings at the Emirates, in a 1-1 draw with Manchester City, and a lack of creativity in the final third of Tottenham’s ranks points to another determined defensive display.
The absence of Gabriel causes some disruption defensively but it is an area where Arsenal are well stocked following the signings of Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapie and it is unlikely to alter Arteta’s cautious approach.
Arsenal have rarely taken off the handbrake this season – seven of their eight league wins have featured no more than three goals – and their last four top-flight successes have ended 1-0 or 2-0.
Spurs have an excellent road record, having taken 13 points from five away games including an impressive 2-0 victory at Manchester City in August.
However, injuries in forward areas are not helping matters for Thomas Frank and they have failed to score in three of their last six outings, with set-pieces regularly coming to the rescue just as they have been for Arsenal.
But the Gunners have far more dangerous options to call upon in attack than Tottenham, who look fairly reliant on Mohammed Kudus to create their spark, and breaking down this disciplined defence could be one of the toughest tests of all.
Arsenal completed a league double over Tottenham last season to maintain their recent dominance in north London, winning 1-0 away before a 2-1 success at the Emirates, and this could follow a similar pattern as the hosts go out to cement their position at the summit.

Romero may become unruly
Last season’s two Premier League meetings produced a combined 12 yellow cards and renowned hothead Cristian Romero should be a leading card candidate this time.
Romero has appeared nine times in the league this season and has collected four cards, three of which have come on the road at City, Brighton and Leeds. He has also been booked in two of the last four north London derbies.
Trossard could excel again
Arsenal remain the most dominant team at set-pieces, ten of which have come from corners, free-kicks or throw-ins, and that is largely down to the ever-increasing quality of Declan Rice’s delivery.
The absence Gabriel softens that threat, however, so Leandro Trossard from open play may be Arsenal’s best chance of breaking the deadlock.
The Belgian international has really stepped up to the plate for the Gunners, scoring twice and grabbing two assists in his last five appearances, and he is a regular shot contributor.
