Calgary families voice concerns over treatment of mothers in care facilities

Two families in the Calgary area are voicing serious concerns about the treatment their elderly mothers have received in separate care facilities, urging for greater accountability among health-care aides.

Edna Davies, a resident at AgeCare McKenzie Towne, developed noticeable severe bruising and skin tears, prompting her daughters, Barb and Terry Davies, to launch an investigation under the Protection for Persons in Care Act. This inquiry revealed a troubling assessment of Edna’s care, indicating that the “Fall Risk Assessment” conducted was inadequate and inaccurate, and that it contradicted her established care plan. Moreover, the investigation uncovered evidence of significant bodily harm. Despite repeated requests for comment, AgeCare McKenzie Towne has not responded.

In a separate case, Kelly Geransky became increasingly concerned about his mother, Helen Geransky, after noticing drastic changes in her mood. Frustrated by unproductive conversations with staff at Airdrie Community Care, Kelly and his sister opted to install cameras in their mother’s room. The footage they captured allegedly reveals multiple instances of neglect by health-care aides.

The Airdrie Community Care facility has since changed ownership, and the new operators have stated that they have thoroughly reviewed the concerns raised by the Geransky family and have taken steps to address them.

In a move aimed at enhancing the quality of care in similar facilities, the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta will expand its jurisdiction in February 2026 to include health-care aides. This new regulation will require all individuals in these roles, regardless of whether they work at private or publicly funded facilities, to register with the college, potentially increasing accountability and standards in long-term care.

These alarming incidents highlight the urgent need for systemic reforms to ensure the safety and dignity of vulnerable individuals in care homes.
