Malcolm Webster now as The Widower tells true story of murderer

The Widower has just been added to Netflix, having originally aired on ITV in 2014, and it is already climbing the streamer’s most-watched chart.

The series documents the life and crimes of Malcolm Webster (played by Reese Shearsmith), a nurse from Surrey who murdered his first wife and attempted to kill his second.

The now 66-year-old would habitually pursue relationships with women and relied on them to supplement his income.

In 1993, he married Claire Morris from Aberdeenshire, and during the course of their marriage, he drugged her.

In May 1994, he drugged Claire before staging a car crash with her in the passenger seat and setting the car on fire, making it out to be an accident.

In 1997, he went on to marry oncology nurse Felicity Drumm in New Zealand and they had a son together.

He staged a second car crash in 1999 and was accused of attempting to kill her to fraudulently obtain £750,000 from nine insurance policies.

Webster had also planned to marry Simone Banarjee, having told her he had terminal leukaemia.

She ended up changing her will, leaving her entire estate to Webster, but police warned her about her fiancé’s past and revealed he already had a wife and son.

In July 2011, he was sentenced to a minimum of 30 years in prison and remains incarcerated to this day.

The former nurse was found guilty of murdering Claire Morris and attempting to kill Felicity Drumm.

The crimes were committed as part of a plot to claim almost £1m in life assurance money.

In 2016, he attempted to have his case referred back to the High Court, but the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission refused his application.

Earlier in 2013, he lost an appeal when judges rejected a claim he was the victim of a miscarriage of justice.
