Two young women facing life in prison over $33 million find in their suitcases

Two New Zealand women have been charged after more than $33 million worth of meth was found inside their suitcases at Melbourne Airport.
The pair, both aged 22, were chosen for a baggage examination after they arrived in Australia from Malaysia yesterday.
Border force officers allegedly found while crystal substance in both suitcases, totalling 36kg.

That substance tested positive for meth.
The quantity of the drug had an estimated street value of more than $33 million.
The women were arrested and both charged with importing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug and possessing a commercial quantity of a border-controlled drug.
They are facing a maximum penalty of life in prison.
The pair will spend the holidays behind bars ahead of their next appearance at the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court in March.

Australian Border Force Superintendent Ian Beasant said officers were seizing significant quantities of drugs at the border.
“Organised crime groups share one motivating factor for their nefarious activities and that is accumulating profit,” he said.
“The ABF will continue working closely with our partners using intelligence-led targeting to ensure our border is secure.”
