Global star’s chaotic arrival in Sydney

It’s the last thing anyone would want after coming off a long-haul flight, but Lewis Capaldi dealt with Aussie fans’ enthusiastic welcome like the graceful star that he is when he touched down in Sydney this week.
As he walked off the plane and out of the boarding gates at Sydney airport, the Before You Go singer looked every bit the Aussie local.
Dressed in a pair of casual brown shorts paired with a black hoodie and white sneakers, the 29-year-old Scotsman blended in with travellers.
But it didn’t take long for fans to spot the global sensation, swarming in to greet him and take photos.
Clutching a bottle of water and his headphones still in, he happily obliged, sending the crowd around him buzzing over their surprise celebrity encounter.
Capaldi is in town to kick off his Australian tour, starting with Brisbane on December 4th before moving to Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, and finishing off in Perth on December 17th.
It’s the comeback many diehard fans have been waiting for after the singer took two years away from the spotlight to focus on his health.
Back in 2023, the singer-songwriter confirmed he would be taking a break from performing due to his ongoing struggle with Tourette’s syndrome and vocal issues – both triggering his spiralling anxiety.
At the time, he devastatingly closed his Glastonbury set in tears before opening up to fans about his ongoing issues, which would ultimately see him take a brief step back.
“The fact that this probably won’t come as a surprise doesn’t make it any easier to write, but I’m very sorry to let you know I’m going to be taking a break from touring for the foreseeable future,” he confirmed later in a statement on social media.
“I used to be able to enjoy every second of shows like this and I’d hoped 3 weeks away would sort me out. But the truth is I’m still learning to adjust to the impact of my Tourette’s and on Saturday it became obvious that I need to spend much more time getting my mental and physical health in order, so I can keep doing everything I love for a long time to come.”
Capaldi returned to the scene with his emotional single Survive perfectly capturing his toughest times off stage.
“Though it hurts sometimes, I’m gonna get up and live, until the day that I die, I swear to God I’ll survive,” he sings. “Most nights, I fear that I’m not enough, but I refuse to spend my best years rotting in the sun.”
The heartbreaking track is set to be the tear-jerker of the tour.
The visit Down Under marks the first time he has returned to Australia since the Falls Festival in 2019.
