Steve Spurrier addresses rumors about his ‘failing’ health

Legendary college football coach Steve Spurrier still follows the University of Florida football program closely and is an ambassador for the Gators athletics department.

Spurrier was asked recently on Another Dooley Noted Podcast about rumors that he is involved in the hiring process to replace Billy Napier. Particularly, he was asked about the notion that he is trying to lure Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin to Gainesville.

In order to answer the question, Spurrier brought up a rumor about his health and how it was allegedly failing.

“Well, somebody put on the internet that I was going to die in about a year or something, failing health,“ Steve Spurrier recalled. ”And I had a bunch of my buddies, friends, call, ‘Are you alright, coach? Are you in the hospital?’ I said, ‘No, I’m fine.’”

Spurrier added that there is a ton of misinformation on the internet and that too many people believe everything that they read or see.

“False information, lies. It’s easy to just put out anything you want to. And I guess that average person believes it,” Spurrier said. “I mean, we’ve got politicians that have been doing that for years. Just put it out there and half the people will believe you.”

While Spurrier said that he is not involved in the hiring process at Florida, he did acknowledge that he knows a couple of candidates well, including Lane Kiffin. It seems as though he would be all for Kiffin taking the Florida job, even if he isn’t heavily involved in trying to persuade him to come.

Spurrier also mentioned Missouri coach Eli Drinkwitz as someone who he believes would do an outstanding job at UF.

“I know Lane Kiffin, I know Eli Drinkwitz. Obviously either one of those guys would be super if it works out,” Spurrier said. “But it’s a long ways from whoever we’re going to get as a coach, in my opinion, right now.”
