Eddie Howe must decide whether to throw in out-of-sorts Anthony Gordon at Everton tomorrow.
The England international returned from a hip injury in Marseille but was used as a central striker in the 2-1 defeat. With Harvey Barnes in a rich vein of form on the left wing and Nick Woltemade set to start on Merseyside, Gordon’s role will be an intriguing one.
Gordon has not scored a Premier League goal this season and has only shone in the Champions League with four goals to his name. Although, after starting brightly at the Velodrome, he faded in the latter stages before going off.
When asked on Gordon’s form, Howe said: “A little bit in and out really. He’s had some really good games, the Benfica game and another game around that spell when he was electric, really good, one of his best games.
“Then he had the sending off against Liverpool, the hip injury so it’s been a bit bitty for him.
“No doubt he’ll be looking to find his best form and we’ll try help him to get there. That’s where it is.”
Gordon missed a penalty at Goodison Park last season but will want to star at the new Hill-Dickinson Stadium.
The Scouser’s last Premier League goal came back in January, prompting questions about why he can’t get things back on track this term on a consistent basis.
Howe responded: “I think it’s always a difficult one, as I’ve said many, many times, to give a definitive answer on that.
“That belies his Champions League form this season, where he scored goals in a game of football regardless of the competition. I think it’s a game of football, so I think it’s tough to judge him negatively in that respect.
“He’s always been historically a scorer of important goals for us. You go back through the showreels of our goals, and he’s invariably got big ones in big competitions and big moments.I back him to score goals and continue to enjoy his career here.
“Obviously, that’s going to come down to him and taking those opportunities when they come.”
