Netflix cancels original docuseries after 2 seasons

Just two seasons into its run, Netflix is canceling “Starting 5,” its behind-the-scenes documentary series following the NBA, according to Sports Business Journal.

The series, which debuted in 2024, followed the season-long journeys of five NBA stars. The first season featured a star-studded lineup that included Lebron James, Jimmy Butler, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Edwards and Domantas Sabonis.

However, the viewership numbers seemingly didn’t live up to expectations. Season 1 drew 4.6 million views during its first period of availability, from July to December 2024, and dropped to just 1 million views in the first half of 2025, according to What’s on Netflix.

Meanwhile, “Quarterback” — Netflix’s same-style docuseries that follows NFL players in-season — drew 12.7M views in its opening period, according to the report. “F1: Drive to Survive,” which follows F1 racers, had 10.4M views.

Numbers for Season 2 have not yet been made available. Neither season appeared in Netflix’s weekly Top 10 shows list, according to the report.
