Live radar: Strong cold front to bring freezing temperatures, rain to North Texas

It’s time to bring out the winter coats, scarves and beanies along with an umbrella.
The holiday weekend could see rain ahead of a front expected to bring the coldest air felt so far this season.
According to the National Weather Service’s Fort Worth office, scattered showers and storms will develop Saturday afternoon and evening in North and Central Texas, with up to an inch falling in some places.
The weather service issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Northeastern Johnson, North Central Hill and West Central Ellis counties until 5:45 p.m.

About 4:42 p.m., a severe thunderstorm hit Alvarado with 60 mph winds and quarter-sized hail. Other locations impacted include Coyote Flats, Griffith and Sand Flat. The weather service emphasized that hail and wind damage are expected.
As of 5:38 p.m., 650 flights out of DFW International Airport had been delayed, and the Federal Aviation Administration had issued a ground stop set to last until 5:30 p.m. due to thunderstorms.
As of 5:38 p.m., the FAA changed the ground stop to a ground delay, which is expected to last until 10:29 p.m.
Some storms in Central and East Texas could become strong or marginally severe with hail and gusty winds, the weather service said.
The cold front is set to arrive Saturday.

Much colder and windy conditions are expected to arrive Sunday, with wind chills dropping into the mid-teens to mid-20s. The chilly temperatures will linger into Monday, with an expected high of 43 degrees.
Freezing winds and cold temperatures will be present Sunday.

Some light precipitation will also return Monday, with a small potential of light sleet or freezing rain in the morning.
Morning temperatures are expected to stay near freezing continuing through Tuesday and gradually warming to highs in the 60s at the end of the week.
Next week will see cold temperatures persisting at the beginning and gradually warming as the week goes on.

The same front has brought a major snowstorm to the Midwest and Great Lakes, bringing winter to some holiday travelers.
As of Saturday morning, more than 8 inches of snow had hit northern Iowa, and at least that much snow was expected in Chicago as well as other parts of Illinois, Wisconsin, Indiana and Michigan.
So far, forecast conditions do not meet blizzard warning criteria, meteorologists said.

Here’s a few tips for braving chilly temperatures
- Check road conditions before hitting the road. The Texas Department of Transportation’s DriveTexas map can be filtered to show accidents, closures and other incidents related to ice and snow across the state. If you choose to drive, use extra caution.
- Dress in several layers of loose-fitting clothes and cover your face and mouth, if possible, and stay dry.
- Watch for signs of hypothermia.
- If you lose power, do not store your food outside. Keep the refrigerator and freezer doors closed.
- Pad any pipes that are in unheated parts of your home, such as outdoors, with foam covers or cloth. Remember to drip your faucets to prevent freezing.
