Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders downplayed his heated exchange with teammate Jerry Jeudy during Sunday’s 26-8 defeat to the San Francisco 49ers, saying the chemistry between quarterback and wide receiver needs time to develop.

“As players and teammates, we have to be able to jell with each other and be comfortable with each other in every situation,” Sanders said. “That takes time, it takes a lot of things.”

As seen during the CBS broadcast Sunday, Jeudy — a sixth-year receiver in his second year with the Browns — appeared to be loudly arguing with Sanders, a rookie making his second start. The two looked to be arguing over a play on a computer tablet, with Jeudy clapping his hands several times and saying, “That’s wrong, that’s wrong!”

Browns center Ethan Pocic then stepped in between the two to break it up. Jeudy walked away while Sanders shook his head and muttered something to himself.

In the game, Jeudy had four targets and caught three of those passes for 26 yards. On the Browns’ first possession, Sanders overthrew a wide-open Jeudy on a deep pass down the middle that could have been a 66-yard score had it not been overthrown.

Jeudy caught 90 passes for 1,229 yards last season but has only 35 receptions for 421 yards through 12 games this season.

“We’re going to have sparks, but it’s going to take time to develop that chemistry with everybody, to be on the same page with Jerry,” Sanders said. “Of course you want to be able to get him the ball, but to be honest, it’s going to take time. I’m more of a trust person, and that’s what it boils down to.

“A lot of times out there, passing-wise, we aren’t seeing things at the same lens. Certain guys aren’t in the same spot that we’ve seen when we practice.”

Jeudy did not answer questions from media members after the game.
