Report: Reliever Williams set to leave Yankees for Mets in free agency

Former All-Star reliever Devin Williams is set to sign a three-year deal with the New York Mets after a trying single season with the Yankees in 2025, according to multiple reports.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports the contract is worth $45 million.

Following five terrific seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers, the 31-year-old right-handed thrower was traded to the Yankees ahead of last season with the expectation he’d be their closer.
Williams struggled with consistency throughout 2025, failing to maintain the closer’s role for the entire season.
In 67 appearances, Williams posted a 4.79 ERA and 18 saves, alongside 90 strikeouts and 25 walks over 62 innings pitched.
Williams produced ERAs of 1.93 in 2022, 1.53 in 2023 and 1.25 in 2024 with the Brewers the three seasons prior to joining the Yankees.
The native of St. Louis pitched better in the playoffs, allowing no runs in four innings, as the Yankees fell to the Toronto Blue Jays in four games in the American League Division Series.
Williams joins a Mets team that underperformed and missed the playoffs in 2025 and are seemingly set to lose star closer Edwin Diaz in free agency.
