Yankees All-Star Projected To Sign 4-Year, $60M Deal With Hated Rival

The New York Yankees swung a huge trade with the Milwaukee Brewers last offseason to acquire Devin Williams. But Williams’ year with the Yankees wasn’t as dominant as many expected it to be,

Now Williams is a free agent, and there are plenty of teams that could be willing to take a risk on him. Practically every contending team is looking to add to its bullpen in the offseason, so Williams could fit with almost every team in baseball.

Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently projected Williams would sign a four-year, $60 million deal with the New York Mets this winter.

“Williams very well could take a shorter deal that allows him to get right back to free agency after one good season, but for this deal, we are projecting what a four-year contract could look like,” Finkelstein wrote. “If the Mets, or any team, commits to four years of Williams at $15 million per, they can likely place an opt-out after the second year instead of the first, guaranteeing two years of his services in the back-end of their bullpen.”

The Mets could lose closer Edwin Diaz to free agency this winter, which would seemingly cripple their bullpen. They’re likely going to want to retain Diaz at all costs.

Either way, signing Williams makes a lot of sense.

They could sign him as the new closer if Diaz leaves, which would be a huge risk. But they could also use him as a setup man to Diaz or another star closer. Either way it goes, the idea makes plenty of sense for the Mets.
